Pre-Conference Workshop
Tuesday 8 June 2010, 9am – 5pm

Large Scale Utility Energy Storage to Support a Resilient Smart Grid

  • Evaluating emerging and advanced storage technologies
  • Application of energy storage to market function through dispatchable renewable energy generation
  • Application of energy storage to enable system regulation, desirable energy to power ratio, and impact on traditional generation units
  • Application of energy storage to distribution grids, distributed and centralized deployment options, and control strategies
  • Comparing and evaluating cost competitiveness of compressed air, pumped hydro, ultracapacitors, flywheels, several prominent battery technologies, and fuel cells
  • Improving overall Smart Grid system performance
  • The way forward for large scale utility energy storage in enabling the Smart Grid

About your workshop leader:

Dr. Geoff James
Principal Research Scientist, Energy Technology, CSIRO Australia

Geoff James is a Principal Research Scientist in CSIRO’s Energy Transformed Flagship. He works with a multi-disciplinary team to promote the adoption of distributed energy technology in Australia and to develop new technologies to help manage electricity demand and distributed generation. These are key steps towards a modern, intelligent electricity grid and they encourage greater customer participation in solving Australia’s peak demand and greenhousegas emission problems. Geoff received his PhD in Physics (1991) for research in radioastronomy at the University of Tasmania. He then joined CSIRO and until 2002 worked on research and commercial projects in antenna metrology, phase retrieval, antenna analysis and design, electromagnetic theory, and numerical analysis. Geoff then coordinated research applying multi-agent technology applied in several physical environments. Specialising in distributed energy since 2004, his research interests include demand management, integrating renewable generation, distribution network evolution, and energy storage technology and applications.
